Windows 10 to be free for Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 7 users for first year

Windows 10 event is over, and one of the most highlighted feature of the event was that it was told that Windows 10 will be free to upgrade to for users of Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows Phone 8/8.1 users for the first year. So basically Microsoft wants everyone to be on one level for them to provide service to. One year time frame tells that Microsoft wants this to happen as quick as possible so that developers don't have to worry about which version of Windows each consumer is running.
Windows was told to be a "service", so there is speculation that Microsoft MAY charge users on subscription basis. Though Microsoft failed to comment on this by saying that they don't have any plans about the subscription in their mind.
What is important here is to notice that Microsoft hasn't left behind older consumers from getting a taste of the latest technology (though all features may not be available on all devices) unlike Google and Apple.
