There was a recent report complaining about the profusion of expensive fake apps in the Windows Store pretending to be big names from other platforms.
It turns out the issue is present in the Windows Phone Store also.
From the screen shot above, we can see a wide collection of big name apps, such as Snapseed, Instagram, Afterlight, Retrica Pro and PicSay. These apps are famous on the iOS and Android store, and new Windows Phone users are quite likely to search the store looking for WP versions.
Unfortunately it is pretty likely these fake apps, differentiated only by the : at the end of the name, will turn up. The product description and screen shots are stolen from the iOS or Android stores, and the apps are pretty expensive without a free trial.
Microsoft has said they will work to address the issues in the Windows Store, saying:
We strive to make the Windows Store a high-quality experience for customers and also accessible to the broadest audience of developers. Based on customer and developer feedback, we recently took actions to help users discover the specific app titles they’re searching for and improve the overall Store experience. Those updates provide clear guidance to developers and also improve our ability to identify, audit and remove problematic apps. We recognize that there is more work to do and will continue to re-evaluate our policies to strike a balance between the opportunity for developers and the app quality that our customers expect.
We hope they also turn their attention to the Windows Phone Store, as we certainly do not need these kind of “apps” to swell the store numbers.
