Microsoft to buy Minecraft Maker Mojang
The software giant is ready to pay $2.5 billion for the game that has been played for 2billion hours in the past 2 years. Yes, Microsoft is getting Minecraft.
“Gaming is a top activity spanning devices, from PCs and consoles to tablets and mobile, with billions of hours spent each year,” said Nadella. “Minecraft is more than a great game franchise – it is an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft.”
The Mojang team will join Microsoft Studios, maker of popular video games Halo, Forza and Fable, among others. Microsoft expects the deal to close in late 2014 and to break even on the acquisition in fiscal 2015.
Why Minecraft? Microsoft wants the younger gen.(Minecraft Players) to know what Microsoft and Windows is all about. They want to make an ecosystem that the younger generation would love to play with. The fact that Minecraft is already there on lots of other platforms except Windows Phone can be another reason for this big buy. I hope Microsoft gets out Minecraft for Windows Phone soon!
